Notes from meeting March 3, 2012

What do we have?
Thunder Mountain has great equipment, other schools have varying degrees of useful technology. Thunder Mountains equipment could be used more if teachers knew more.
We have people/teachers in our district that are ready, willing, and able to support others with technology but have not been asked, or have been under utilized.
What do we need?
Time dedicated to technology related teaching/learning
In-service days for next year
Early release
District Wide Technology Conference
We have local people who are experts in tech, who may be available and willing to share
We need to schedule Jim Sills Google
How can we deliver information school-wide
Early Release/PC time (already planned- can it be flexible?)
Dedicated tech coaches to help teachers implement technology
Teachers sharing projects with others
A way for those who use technology to share with others even in a small way.
Look at edmodo? -posting technology rich projects teachers/students are using.
Use Google Docs
Work with UAS to provide classes(short 4-6 week classes 1-2 credits) at Thunder Mountain for teachers and students together?

Ten Top Social Media Competencies for Teachers

April 14, 2012 Technology Committee notes

5 pt Plan
1. Advocate and secure funding
2. Build and maintain robust infrastructure
3. Deliver ongoing, individualized Professional Development
4. Achieve efficiencies, financial savings through paperless goals.
5. Open the tech environment

1.) JSD Budget/Funding: $300,000 has been adopted by the board for technology. It was a 5 to 2 vote. Chris and John testified.
ACS has just completed an internal mapping of our capacity. Buildings are done but lead technician had to go on medical leave so new technician is coming.
The majority of the $ will go to infrastructure dependent on the assessment.
*Waiting to hear from the legislature.
Discussion of District needs: Harborview teachers completed a technology survey. Teachers want more training but were not specific. Students method of saving their work. MAPS is an issue regarding technology.

2) Kodiak: A contingent is going to Kodiak April 25th and 26th to look at use of technology resources. Julie, Chris, Tom, Jim Hicks, Ryan Alsup, Lori Hoover, Carin. Apple is providing the lodging.

3) Google is coming!
  • How to get the word out? Chris has it scheduled as a staggered school by school and 1-on-1 changeover.
Primary purpose: email! Now use communigate but it’s very cumbersome. Google will host email for free. Will make it easier to collaborate among staff, district calendars,

Goals:
How to prioritize our needs?
Near-term and long-term professional development

  • Apple is coming: Wed/Thurs. May 2nd/3rd , can get coverage to attend part or full days. See email: Ed Tech Visioning

Next year? Professional development needs:
  • Ipads: How to manage/use
  • Google changeover and how we use it in our classrooms.
Google docs: Google forms
Communications plan
What to expect during the summer? What can teachers do to prepare? Common questions?
Trainer in Juneau: Pam Morris (not with google but experienced)
Jim Sill-Google trainer with a website (also a teacher) is a great presenter.
  • Tech mentors? Collaboration groups, PLC’s
    • Ipod user groups
    • Google user groups
    • Include students

Roxy & Mark Stanley: will be convening a ipad users group. It’s for community members. Important to learn from each other.

Professional Development: Julie, Lynnette, Renee, Carolyn, Kathie

ASDN: Kelly Tonsmire, Provide edtech classes to increase technology use in the classroom
i-pad use/apps: from beginner to more advanced
google use
Presenters: Jim Sills, Pam Morris provide training

Need a couple of people at each school launched and in working order on google by the start of the school year.

*How to provide incentive/time and support for those teachers to provide in building staff development and support.

Some schools are trying to learn other programs at the start of the year: Example: RVB & GV are going to be implementing Story Town and a new Math Program (yet to be determined) that have technology components (Think Central for Story Town). Concern that teachers want to have training on required program implementation and may feel overwhelmed if learning a new system like google.

Fragmented programs:
What curriculum is being adopted that requires professional development?
Create a list of district wide programs that utilize technology-provide
Site based programs that may be useful to adopt at other buildings.
How can we spread the knowledge?
How will training be provided? What would the format, size of training groups be? (May be different for different buildings dependent on size?)
Who can provide the training?
Colleagues providing training?
What tech training do we need?
Podcasts
Smart boards
Ipads: apps
Use of handhelds, (ie…building fluency)

Social networking safety

Elementary and Secondary have separate professional development dates in the fall.
Sept: Elementary, November: HS
